A football wide receiver, also referred to as wideouts or simply receivers, is an offensive position in football, and is the key player in most of the passing plays. They get their name because they are split out "wide" (near the sidelines), farthest away from the rest of the team. Football wide receivers are among the fastest players on the field. The wide receiver functions as the pass-catching specialist.
Wide receivers and tight ends are the principal players who catch passes in American football, although running backs also are used extensively in every passing offense. Football receivers may be tall, short, lean, fast, and quick but to excel as a receiver, a football player must have nimble hands (hands that are very good at catching the ball). Also Wide receivers, must have the ability to concentrate under defensive duress. Be courageous under fire and strong enough to withstand physical punishment.
The receivers need to line up before a play. One wide receiver, usually the split end, lines up on the line of scrimmage. The other receiver, the flanker, must line up 1 yard behind the line of scrimmage.
